Zynga is a creator and a provider of social game services. Located in San Francisco, California, the company develops games that work on stand-alone mobile phone platforms (Apple iOS and Android) and as application widgets (embedded on Zynga.com, Facebook, Google+, and Tencent). Zynga states its mission as “Connecting the world through games.

Zynga is one of the most successful companies to engage with Facebook. In fact, five of the top 10 most popular games currently on Facebook were developed by this company. Currently, they have almost 300 MILLION users interacting with their games. So let’s take a look at some of the best Zynga games!

Farmville

Farmville is a farming simulation social network game developed by Zynga in 2009. It is similar to Happy Farm, Farm Town, and video games such as the Harvest Moon series.

Gameplay involving various aspects of farm management such as ploughing land, planting, growing and harvesting crops, harvesting trees and bushes, and raising livestock.

Farmville is a 2D virtual simulation MMO. Although it is not the only farming game, Farmville is by far the most popular. Millions of users log in each day to transform into budding farmers and compete with friends for the reigning title of Ultimate Farmer. Have fun growing crops, selling harvests, caring for livestock, and building the best farm on the block.

FarmVille has 74,806,786 monthly active users. The game has 16,022,479 fans on Facebook. FarmVille was released June 19, 2009. The application has a rating of 4.1 out of 5.

Cityville

Cityville is a game that combines some of the farming gameplay elements found in Farmville or Frontierville with city building elements similar to Sim City. This simple premise proved surprisingly popular and in just a short time Cityville had more active players than Farmville, which previously held the record for most active players.

Despite a simple premise, Cityville is actually one of the most complex games Zynga has ever produced, due to the variety of game play elements it utilizes. The game features two different types of building resources, a limited energy bar, and real time events. In addition, real life friends play a critical role in your ability to progress throughout the game.

Zynga’s Cityville  has broken another record, moving past 100 million monthly active users in Facebook’s latest stats update. The game now stands at 100,064,578 MAU, with 18,591,715 daily active users.

Hidden Chronicles

Your Uncle Geoffrey has been killed, and the secret lies in the elegant estate where he lived. Your job is to uncover the secrets hidden in every corner of the Ramsey Manor.

That’s the opening of Hidden Chronicles, a new Facebook game from Zynga that targets a market beyond anything the social gaming giant has gone after before.

Hidden Chronicles is a “hidden object” game, where players obsessively click on an illustrated still image to find all of the objects that are hidden within it

Rival social game maker Playdom helped kickstart the market for these games — favored by women — on Facebook earlier this year with the enormously popular Gardens of Time, which still has 7.7 million monthly active users, according to AppData. While there are hugely successful hidden object games on casual game web sites, there’s a shortage of them on Facebook, and that’s why Zynga is launched Hidden Chronicles.

Cafe World is an exciting game where you build and manage your very own restaurant! Be the head chef and discover new dishes to cook and serve, expand your restaurant and employ your friends, or visit neighbours to try out their latest creations and trade gifts to help each other succeed!

You are Head Chef of your Restaurant and your character should reflect that! If you are unhappy with your appearance at any time, you can easily change it by clicking on the shirt icon from the lower left hand menu (in between your cookbook and the decoration buttons).

This brings up the customization screen where you can easily modify skin color, facial features, hair and eyes as well as purchase new clothes and accessories with your hard earned Cafe World Coins! You can also edit your character by clicking it in game.

Café World has 30,304,588 monthly active users. The game has 4,228,008 fans.  The game has a rating of 3.1 out of 5.

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars is  a multiplayer Social network game created by Zynga. In Mafia Wars the gamers play as gangsters building their own mafia. The players fight other players online and complete tasks to gain rewards and strength in the game.

The game is a freemium game, meaning it is free to play normally but players have the option of purchasing premium content. As of July 2011, the game had 8 million monthly active users.

Is Zynga building its own social platform?

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ:ZNGA), creator of FarmVille and other popular social games, has lost  its special relationship with Facebook.

Zynga and Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) have had a symbiotic relationship since 2010 by which Zynga was the only provider of social game software that was allowed to promote its games to Facebook’s one billion users. In return, Zynga used Facebook’s credit system to process payments even on its own Zynga.com games platform.

The close relationship between the two companies had made Zynga the single largest contributor to Facebook revenues outside of advertising. For its part, Zynga is thought to have received about 80% of its revenue from Facebook users.

So Zynga is more than Farmville (although it may always remain its most visible mascot), and its  fortunes are tied closely to Facebook. Call me naive, but as a fan of Zynga’s games, I think the company can stand on its own two feet because of its great products.
