In today’s world, many companies including Happy Marketer embrace a strategy called ”employee rotation’. Instead of having a specific career path, our employees have the ability to move between job roles or departments. It doesn’t mean that they will be constantly promoted, but it does mean that they will be exposed to many verticals of an organization.
Happy Marketer has been practicing this over the last few years and we have found it to be very effective not only for our employee’s personal growth and development but also for the business as a whole. This is how we approach the strategy and how the job rotation benefits us:
Hamster On A Wheel
Many employees must be experiencing that feeling at certain points in their career. Sitting at your desk and constantly doing the same thing every day will eventually lead to boredom. People need to do something to stimulate their brain and give them a challenge. According to a survey from Gallup, 68% of employees are disengaged from their jobs, where they just put in a minimum effort at work in a robotic manner. With job rotation, they get a chance to feel challenged, learn new things, and this prevents them from a repetitive and mundane job, thus keeping them motivated. And from our experience, a motivated employee is the HAPPIEST one.
Here Comes The Champion
So often when an employee performs poorly in his or her role, we automatically think that they are not suited for any roles in the company. But in reality, perhaps their chosen career path may not be the right one for them. They might be happier facing newer challenges that help them learn new skills. If you have employees who have expressed interest in trying out new roles, learning new things, don’t ask them to pack up and leave. Embrace them, help them in finding a new passion, and push them to be the best version of themselves. From that point, you will find out your employee’s strengths and weaknesses, hence being able to place them in the right role in order for the company to benefit.
Plan B, Plan C, Plan D
By having a job rotation in the company, you will be able to find out and map the skill sets of your employees. That means if an employee leaves you will still be able to rely on the other employees to fill in the gap. And the good thing is that we don’t need to panic as this will buy us time to hire a good replacement.
It Is Not Just Rainbow And Butterflies
This strategy should be implemented with careful consideration, clear guidelines, and constant monitoring. You have to treat the employee just like any new hire; check on them on a regular basis, communicate constantly to ensure a smooth transition.
This strategy can be costly and time-consuming. Despite investing in helping employees rotate, you might not know if this will work a 100% or not. This can result in lost time, cost, and end up with an uncomfortable employee who could potentially mess up other departments and affect the business overall.
In some levels, it won’t be possible. This is especially true in highly skilled positions where employees need years of training to do their jobs. Ideally, this is suitable for new entrants to mid-level employees to make them understand how the company functions across different departments.
In the beginning, job rotation may seem time-consuming and complex, but if planned well with full commitment from both the employee and the company, this strategy is likely to have a very positive impact.
